Protect wilderness
It is wonderful that in a time of rancor between the major parties, bipartisan efforts to protect wilderness are saving the places we all love ("Politicians working hard for our environment," May 8).
I want to compliment Rep. Mary Bono for recognizing that protection of our last remaining wild areas is important to all of us and for her leadership in introducing legislation to designate new wilderness, wild and scenic rivers and monument lands.
These areas are an incredible treasure. Their protection enhances the quality of our lives, raises our property values and bolsters our economy through tourism.
It also helps ensure that irreplaceable natural icons like Peninsular bighorn sheep and Joshua tree forests will be enjoyed not only by us but by future generations.
As a mother, it's important to me that my child and other children have the same opportunity to experience the amazing diversity and wonder of nature that I did growing up in this area.
I'm heartened that we have leaders today, including Sen. Boxer and Rep. Bono, who understand as Teddy Roosevelt did, how important it is to preserve the rich and intricate tapestry of our region's natural and cultural heritage.
