Proposed Snow Creek Area National Monument Addition

©Bill Havert

Size: Approximately 50 acres
Management Agency: Bureau of Land Management (currently acquiring the land)
Location: The northern end of the Monument adjacent to Interstate 10

Description:
The proposed Snow Creek addition is a key piece of an area identified as a critical wildlife movement corridor between the San Jacinto and San Bernardino Mountains. The Snow Creek area and adjacent land in the Monument have been identified as a Conservation Area in the proposed Coachella Valley Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan. A scientific analysis of the area conducted by the South Coast Wildlands, a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring functional habitat connectivity, showed that many plant and animal species, including the mountain lion, badger, and antelope ground squirrel will benefit from the preservation of this habitat linkage.

The land provides habitat for endangered species, including the Coachella Valley fringe-toed lizard and the Coachella Valley milkvetch. This area also provides travelers on Interstate 10 with their first unobstructed view of the Monument and the spectacular north slope of Mt. San Jacinto.
