Proposed Tahquitz Peak National Monument Addition

Size: Approximately 131 acres
Management Agency: San Bernardino National Forest
Location: Riverside County, 1 mile east of Idyllwild
Description:
This high elevation area contains rare southern California sub-alpine coniferous forests which support a suite of wildlife species with a very limited distribution in southern California including Clark’s nutcrackers, pine siskins and other birds, and the southern rubber boa, a state listed snake. This area is very scenic, with soaring granite rock outcrops and views of up to 100 miles or more on clear days, including distant mountain ranges, the ocean, and San Clemente Island. Tahquitz peak is one of the more accessible peaks in the San Jacinto wilderness area. The hike to the summit and historic fire lookout is very popular, with thousands of people making the trek annually.
